What This Unit Covers
This unit explores what happens during autumn! It explores the science behind seasonal change across five lessons:
- Why the seasons change
- Why leaves change color and fall
- How animals prepare for winter
- Harvest
- Fall weather
It also includes a picture study, a composer/listening study, living book suggestions, hands on extensions, math tie ins, notebook pages, vocabulary cards, a review quiz, and some crafts.
How to Use This Unit
• Read the shared introduction aloud together, then use the age differentiated explanation box for each child.
• Follow every lesson with narration. Have younger children tell back in their own words, or practice writing if they are at that point in their learning journey yet. Older children may also narrate orally or in writing.
• Weave in activities throughout. Have a look at them and decide which ones you want to do and when. We always recommend short, frequent exposure rather than one long sitting.
• There are three notebooking pages at the end of the unit. Have a look at them and print them off a few times. We like to use them more than once! The blank ones provide a great opportunity for dictation. For dictation ideas, use any sentences from the unit, as you go.
• Take a nature walk at least once a week, if you can; use the notebook pages after each lesson.
• Finish with going over the vocabulary. For older kiddos, you can have them try and write a sentence with one of the words or a paragraph with all 3.
